Hello! Bonjour! Bienvenido!
Welcome to my portfolio! Since this is my first post, the following is a little bit about me and the site.
My name is Matt Mueller. I am twenty years-old. I live in the very cold, very cheesy state of Wisconsin. Right now I am a junior studying Computer Science and Finance at the University of Wisconsin – Madison.
I absolutely love making web applications. Building a web application pushes you into fields that you have previously not explored. From the technical details of database and algorithm design to the business side with marketing and economics. It even allows you to explore your own creativity with graphic design and art. As I work towards obtaining both a technical and business degree, I hope to learn the entire spectrum from taking a product from start to finish. Aside from school and various web projects, I also love teaching. I have a job on campus where I teach students various software packages and web languages. One day I’ll be teaching a bunch of Art majors the ins and outs of Photoshop and Illustrator. The next day I’ll teach Excel and HTML to a group of business majors. I find Software Training for Students (STS) to be very rewarding and my portfolio will surely reflect some of my work done with STS. Though this may come as a surprise, but I do have interests that do not involve a computer. This summer I spent a good chunk of my free time on the water. I sailed and windsurfed the beautiful Lake Mendota. You will also often see me jogging around campus or kicking a soccer ball around with some friends.
About the Site
The site is powered by the wonderful Wordpress. The theme has been heavily customized, but I did start with a rock-solid foundation using the Shape theme. Some of my creative influences were the television hit, Mad Men and the NY Times Design Director’s blog, subtraction.com. Oh and of course I relied heavily on Smashing Magazine for smashing me with great information!
About the Theme
The site revolves around one word: Uncertainty. Uncertainty towards what kind of opportunities the future will bring. I wanted a theme that would capture a moment of uncertainty and would remind us that sometimes we need to take a chance – that sometimes we need to act spontaneously and irrationally when smart opportunities arise. Remember, great reward comes from great risk.
How I see the site
I plan on using the site as my primary resume / portfolio. I have a lot of work that I have done that is currently in limbo and I am using this website as an excuse to put my work online. In addition to putting my work online – I plan on using the site as a place where I can share my thoughts, write tutorials, and connect with others. As a college student you are constantly bombarded with information – I hope to be able to share some of that information with you. I also hope to have some guest writers talk about things that interest them most. Remember, the site is just a baby! Expect lots of changes as we move forward, especially to how posts and pages are rendered.
